our work explores how space, objects, and everyday experiences can be reinterpreted to create meaningful and lasting spatial narratives.
we coined the term “of thingness” to describe the inherent objectivity found in things. our work focuses on reinterpreting this sense of thingness, recognizing that small, everyday elements often hold the power to create meaningful change. Through a different perspective on the ordinary, new possibilities for transformation emerge.
A Vessel for Taste
VASE는 주얼리 브랜드 SOU와 함께 운영되는 카페로, 브랜드가 가진 감각과 취향을 일상의 머무름으로 확장한 공간이다. 단순히 커피를 소비하는 장소를 넘어, 작업과 휴식, 대화와 집중이 자연스럽게 공존하며 각자의 방식으로 시간을 보낼 수 있는 공간을 만들고자 했다.
공간의 개념은 주얼리가 하나의 형태로 완성되는 몰딩(Molding)의 과정에서 시작한다. 재료가 형틀 안에 담겨 형태를 만들고 단단한 오브제로 완성되듯, VASE 역시 사람들의 다양한 활동과 감각, 취향을 담는 하나의 ‘그릇’으로 공간을 바라보았다. 제안 단계에서는 이를 SENSEMOLD라는 개념으로 정의하고, 몰드의 형틀(Formwork), 단면(Section), 흔적(Trace)을 공간을 구성하는 디자인 언어로 발전시켰다.
콘크리트의 단단하고 거친 물성과 따뜻한 우드를 대비시키고, 바닥과 계단, 가구와 선반에서 서로 다른 재료가 만나고 전환되도록 했다. 이러한 재료의 경계와 단면은 공간에 깊이를 만들고, 절제된 형태와 자연스러운 질감은 시간이 지나도 편안하게 머물 수 있는 분위기를 형성한다.
밝고 열린 공간에서 보다 차분하고 밀도 있는 공간으로 이어지는 흐름은 짧은 커피 한 잔부터 대화와 휴식, 긴 시간의 작업까지 다양한 머무름을 담아낸다. VASE는 카페라는 기능을 넘어, SOU가 가진 취향과 감각이 일상의 시간과 경험으로 이어지는 또 하나의 공간을 제안한다.
VASE is a café operated alongside jewelry brand SOU, extending the brand’s sensibility and taste into a place for everyday life. More than a space for coffee, it is designed to accommodate different ways of spending time—working and resting, focusing and conversing—all within a calm and considered environment.
The concept originates from the molding process through which jewelry takes its final form. Just as material is poured into a mold, shaped, and solidified into an object, VASE is conceived as a vessel that holds different activities, senses, and individual tastes. This idea was developed as SENSEMOLD, translating the formwork, sections, and traces of the molding process into a spatial language.
Solid, tactile concrete is contrasted with the warmth of wood, while transitions across floors, stairs, furniture, and shelving reveal subtle boundaries between materials. These intersections and exposed sections create depth throughout the space, while restrained forms and natural textures establish an atmosphere intended for a slower, longer stay.
The spatial sequence moves from a bright and open environment toward a calmer and more intimate setting, accommodating different rhythms—from a brief coffee to conversation, rest, or extended periods of work. More than a café, VASE translates SOU’s sensibility into a place where taste, work, and everyday moments can be held and shared.
