our work explores how space, objects, and everyday experiences can be reinterpreted to create meaningful and lasting spatial narratives.
we coined the term “of thingness” to describe the inherent objectivity found in things. our work focuses on reinterpreting this sense of thingness, recognizing that small, everyday elements often hold the power to create meaningful change. Through a different perspective on the ordinary, new possibilities for transformation emerge.

PCMC(Pitching Machine)는 서울 신당에 위치한 99㎡ 규모의 하이볼 바로, 전통적인 한국 술 문화를 현대적으로 재해석하고 다양한 문화적 교류가 이루어지는 플랫폼을 지향한다. 단순한 주점이 아니라 거리문화, 음악, 그래픽, 예술 등 서로 다른 문화적 요소들을 재조합해 새로운 방식의 경험을 만들어내는 공간이다.
프로젝트의 중요한 설계 기준 중 하나는 지속가능한 운영 구조를 공간에 반영하는 것이었다. 바 영역은 오픈키친과 연결된 긴 테이블을 중심으로 구성되어 손님이 음료와 음식이 만들어지는 과정을 자연스럽게 경험할 수 있는 퍼블릭 다이닝 구조를 형성한다. 작업 영역에는 금속을, 고객이 머무는 영역에는 원목을 사용해 기능성과 사용자 경험을 동시에 고려했다.
공간의 확장성을 위해 벽과 천장에는 알루미늄 모듈 시스템을 적용했다. 이 시스템은 전시, 이벤트, 브랜드 협업 등 다양한 프로그램에 맞춰 쉽게 재구성될 수 있어, 공간이 고정된 형태에 머무르지 않고 지속적으로 변화하며 활용될 수 있도록 한다. 또한 모듈에 맞춰 설계된 마그네틱 레일 조명은 조도의 위치와 방향을 유연하게 조절할 수 있어 프로그램에 따라 공간의 분위기를 효율적으로 전환할 수 있다.
재료 또한 지속성을 고려해 선택되었다. 콘크리트, 금속, 원목과 같은 솔직한 재료를 사용해 시간이 지날수록 표면의 질감이 깊어지는 **재료의 시간성(material aging)**을 수용하도록 설계했으며, 동일한 재료군으로 제작된 가구들은 공간 경험을 일관된 감각으로 연결한다.
결과적으로 PCMC는 고정된 형태의 공간이 아니라 사람, 사건, 협업에 따라 계속 변화하며 새로운 장면을 만들어내는 유연한 문화 플랫폼으로 기능한다.
PCMC (Pitching Machine) is a 99㎡ highball bar located in Sindang, Seoul. The project aims to reinterpret traditional Korean drinking culture through a contemporary lens while functioning as a cultural platform where fragments of street culture, graphics, architecture, music, and art are recombined to create new experiences.
One of the key design principles was to embed a sustainable operational structure within the spatial design. The central scene of the space is a long bar table connected to an open kitchen, forming a public dining environment where visitors can naturally observe the preparation of drinks and food. The bar table is composed of two materials according to its functional zones: metal is used in the working area to maintain the cool temperature of beverages and ensure hygienic maintenance, while the customer-facing side is finished in solid wood to provide warmth and tactile comfort.
To support long-term adaptability, an aluminum modular system was installed on the walls and ceiling. Designed to accommodate exhibitions, collaborations, and events, the system allows the space to be easily reconfigured according to different programs, enabling the environment to evolve rather than remain fixed. In addition, magnetic rail lighting integrated into the modular structure allows the direction and position of light to be adjusted instantly, making it possible to reshape the atmosphere of the space in response to changing activities.
Material selection also reflects the project’s sustainable approach. Honest and durable materials such as concrete, metal, and wood were chosen to embrace material aging, allowing surfaces to develop richer textures over time. All furniture was fabricated from the same family of materials to maintain a consistent tactile and spatial experience.
Ultimately, PCMC is not a space defined by a static form but one that is completed through people, events, and cultural interactions. It operates as a flexible urban platform capable of continuously adapting and accommodating new collaborations and narratives.
