oftn studio is a Seoul-based spatial design studio working across retail, brand experience, hospitality, and lifestyle environments.
our work explores how space, objects, and everyday experiences can be reinterpreted to create meaningful and lasting spatial narratives.
we coined the term “of thingness” to describe the inherent objectivity found in things. our work focuses on reinterpreting this sense of thingness, recognizing that small, everyday elements often hold the power to create meaningful change. Through a different perspective on the ordinary, new possibilities for transformation emerge.
ways of seeing
AE seongsu는 서울 성수동에 위치한 렌탈 스튜디오로, 다양한 장면과 시선이 생성될 수 있는 공간으로 기획되었다. 이 프로젝트는 사진 촬영이 단순히 대상을 기록하는 행위가 아니라, 렌즈를 통해 현실을 각기 다른 방식으로 해석하고 재구성하는 과정이라는 생각에서 출발한다. 동일한 대상도 촬영자의 시선과 프레이밍에 따라 전혀 다른 이미지로 기록되듯, AE 성수의 공간 또한 다양한 시각적 서사가 만들어질 수 있는 환경을 만드는 것을 목표로 한다.
따라서 공간은 하나의 완성된 배경을 제공하기보다, 여러 장면이 생성될 수 있는 유연한 플랫폼으로 설계되었다. 렌탈 스튜디오라는 프로그램에 맞게 공간은 고정된 세트가 아닌 상황에 따라 다양한 구성이 가능하도록 계획되었으며, 서로 다른 물성의 대비와 입면의 분리를 통해 건축 요소 자체가 시각적 장면을 구성하는 장치로 작동하도록 했다.
특히 중요한 장치는 **움직이는 벽(Movable Walls)**이다. 이 벽들은 필요에 따라 이동하고 조합되며 공간의 구조와 장면을 새롭게 구성한다. 벽의 위치와 관계가 바뀌면서 구조, 소재, 빛의 관계 또한 변화하고, 그 결과 동일한 공간 안에서도 서로 다른 시점과 장면이 만들어진다.
결과적으로 AE 성수는 하나의 고정된 건축적 장면이 아니라 다양한 시선과 해석이 만들어지는 장면 생성 장치로 작동하는 공간이다. 이곳은 사용자의 시선과 작업 방식에 따라 새로운 프레임과 서사가 만들어지는 열린 무대로 기능한다.
AE Seongsu is a rental studio located in Seongsu, Seoul, conceived as a space where multiple scenes and perspectives can be generated. The project begins with the idea that photography is not simply an act of recording a subject, but a process of interpreting and reconstructing reality through the lens. Just as the same subject can be captured in entirely different ways depending on the photographer’s viewpoint and framing, the space of AE Seongsu aims to provide an environment where diverse visual narratives can emerge.
Rather than offering a single completed backdrop, the space was designed as a flexible platform capable of producing a variety of scenes. Responding to the program of a rental studio, the interior was conceived not as a fixed set but as an adaptable environment that can be configured according to different needs. Through the contrast of materials and the separation of surfaces, architectural elements themselves function as devices that construct visual compositions within the space.
A key element of the project is the introduction of movable walls. These walls can be repositioned and recombined as needed, allowing the spatial structure and visual scenes to be continuously reconfigured. As the position and relationship of the walls change, the interactions between structure, material, and light also shift, creating different perspectives and compositions within the same space.
Ultimately, AE Seongsu operates not as a fixed architectural scene but as a scene-generating device where multiple viewpoints and interpretations can emerge. The space functions as an open stage where new frames and narratives are continuously created through the users’ perspectives and creative processes.
